Perhaps the most touching of all tags was the one written by the other legendary icon of Lebanese art, Fairouz.

“Your sun never sets,” she wrote.

Prime Minister Tammam Salam also carried a wreath for her at the funeral, after many of his Cabinet ministers arrived to pay their respects.

“It is just normal that a person, who filled the hearts of all the Lebanese with joy and life, is remembered by all these people in her final day,” MP Elie Keyrouz, observing the huge line of wreaths and reading their tags, told The Daily Star. “But it’s unfortunate that Lebanon is incomplete at this moment. It’s sad that there is no president to tell her goodbye.”

Trying to fight back tears with smiles, Alia, a 70-year-old long-time fan of the artist, nicknamed Sabbouha, found it difficult to find words to express her emotions.

“More than anyone in the whole world, Sabah brought happiness to the hearts of every single person who heard her songs,” she said. “I, and millions like me, would have not enjoyed our youth so much if not for her.”

But not only those who had the chance to grow up in Sabah’s golden years were influenced by her. Many youths rushed down with their parents to Downtown Beirut, sang her songs and threw flowers on her convoy.

The glory of the moment eclipsed its sadness, which left space for each to manifest it in their own way.

Dabke dancers jolted with the sound of her music; singers recited parts of her most notable songs for TV reporters, while the Army brought its orchestra to play the her music in remarkable precedent.

Dressed in black from head to toe and wearing shoes with wooden heels, a woman surprised the crowd when she started performing a flamenco dance in harmonious rhythm.

The church was packed with hundreds of admirers, some of whom watched from the high balconies.

For Hadchiti, Lebanon’s modern singers and actresses have a very important lesson to learn from Shahroura, another nickname, meaning singing bird in Arabic.

“It’s all about modesty,” she said. “If Sabah’s character was not so extraordinarily modest, you wouldn’t have seen all these people coming here just to express how much respect they have for her.”

The funeral convoy carrying Sabah’s coffin had departed around noon from her residence in the Comfort Hotel in Hazmieh, where hundreds of her neighbors flooded the streets to say their goodbyes.

Born Jeanette Feghali in Bdadoun, a town in Aley, the star who passed away at the age 87 was the first Arab singer to perform at Olympia in Paris, Carnegie Hall in New York, Piccadilly Theater in London and the Sydney Opera House in Australia.

BEIRUT (Reuters) – Lebanese singer Sabah, one of the leading Arab performers of her generation, has died at the age of 87, her family said on Wednesday.

Born Jeanette Feghali and known to her fans as the "singing bird", Sabah recorded at least 4,000 songs in her lifetime, experts on her career say.

In the mid-1970s, she became the second Arab singer after Egypt’s Oum Kalthoum to perform at L’Olympia in Paris. She also performed at London’s Royal Albert Hall and the Sydney Opera House. Known affectionately across the Arab world as "Sabouha", a diminutive of Sabah, she began her singing and acting career in the 1940s in Egypt, the center of Arab cinema and entertainment. She acted in 83 movies that played to audiences across the Arabic-speaking world and in 27 Lebanese plays.

Sabah married formally seven times. Her husbands included a politician and some of the Arab world’s famous actors and musicians.

 

 

Born to a Christian family in the village of Bdedoun, a Lebanese town in the Baabda-Aley province, she released her first song in 1940, aged just 13.

The singer soon caught the eye of Egyptian film producer Asia Dagher, who immediately signed her for three films.

The first of these, El-Qalb Louh Wahid (The Heart Has Its Reasons), made her a star – and she was known by her character’s name – Sabah, which is Arabic for morning – ever after.

But she also acquired several affectionate nicknames, including "Shahroura", Arabic for "singing bird", and "Sabbouha," a diminutive of Sabah.

 

Among her most popular films were Soft Hands (1964), Ataba Square (1959) and The Second Man (1960), in which she played a cabaret singer who vows to avenge her brother’s death at the hands of a smuggling ring.

In her parallel music career, she recorded more than 3,000 songs, working with a string of legendary Egyptian composers, including the late Mohammed Abdul-Wahhab.

She specialised in a Lebanese folk tradition called the mawal, and her most famous songs included Zay el-Assal (Your Love is Like Honey on my Heart) and Akhadou el-Reeh (They Took the Wind).

The star held Egyptian, Jordanian and US citizenship as well as Lebanese, and continued to perform and make television appearances into her 80s.

At home, she was humorously mocked for refusing to leave the limelight, as well as her garish outfits and use of cosmetic surgery.

But she was unabashed: "I’m proud that I’m a village girl but I had a lot of ambition," she said in 2008.

"She broke so many taboos. I don’t know if she was even aware of it," said Chady Maalouf, head of programming at Voice of Lebanon radio.

"She was the example of a star, she was totally complete in her appearance, behaviour and voice. She shocked people all the time."

She married nine times, most most notably to Egyptian actor Roshdi Abaza and Lebanese author-director Wassim Tabbara.

Her last marriage, to Lebanese artist Fadi Lubnan, lasted 17 years.

Few artists in the Arab world enjoyed the level of glory and stardom of Sabah. Her unique voice and glamorous style made her one of the top singers and actresses in Lebanon and Egypt. In her hometown she’s considered one of the icons of the traditional song.

On social media there has been an outpouring of comments about Sabah. They are not just paying tribute to a grand voice and great diva but also lamenting the end of the "golden era" that Sabah and other artists of her generation represented to many.

Almost every comment carries a sense of nostalgia and loss, reviving old memories. In a way, that is how Sabah will be remembered; as one of the holders of the artistic memory of Lebanon and the Arab world. Her death is a time to recall her performances and her songs and to reflect on an era that has passed.

 

Today, Lebanon lost a legend. Sabah is gone but she remains in our hearts," Lebanese pop star Nancy Ajram wrote on Twitter.

"Her memory will remain in the minds and hearts of millions," she tweeted.

"Our giants are leaving, our cedars are diminishing. Farewell our Shahroura, our beloved, rest in peace," added singer Ragheb Alameh in a Twitter post.

Lebanese politician Walid Jumblatt wrote on Twitter: "She was a great singer of a Lebanon that my generation knew, that will never come back".

In her last months, Sabah was amused by a number of various fake reports of her passing, said Maalouf.

Sabah  born Jeanette Gergis Al-Feghali, 10 November 1927 – 26 November 2014) was a Lebanese singer and actress. Considered a "Diva of Music" in the Arab World, (the same title often given to Oum Kalthoum, Warda Al-Jazairia and Fairuz), she has released over 50 albums and has acted in 98 movies as well as over 20 stage plays. She has a reported 3,500 songs in her repertoire. She was the first Arabic singer to perform at Olympia in Paris, Carnegie Hall in New York, and Piccadilly Theatre in London and Sydney Opera House in Sydney .
